On the last weekend before exam week, my tax professor assigned a lovely full tax return project with an information packet for us to somehow analyze and complete during this stressful time. In addition to that I had my final HR research paper to write as well as 7 final exams to finish before we flew out to Oregon for cyclocross nationals. Didn't get that much sleep that week. One night I stayed up cramming until 6am when I had an exam at 8am.. One good thing I learned is that when you are sleep deprived it is a lot easier to fall asleep quicker.
I was able to catch up on some sleep on the flight and drive to Bend, which was nice. It was so great to finally relax a little but, but unfortunately I was not able to sleep in the next morning since the course had limited open riding time and the team decided to do the early morning session. I got to play around and drift in the ice/snow/mud which was actually really fun. It was my first time riding in messy conditions all season, so it was good to get in some practice.
Since I was busy with school stuff the prior weekend I couldn't make our starting spots determining race and I ended up being our 4th call up because of that. I already suck at starts, and this didn't help much especially after having a front row last year. Oh well, I passed as many people as I could during the race and was my school's top finisher at 23rd. Crappy compared to last year, but I was pretty happy considering my training of maybe a ride a week for the last 2 months and my starting spot. I was just glad to be done with exams, done with work, and done with the stress of knowing I wouldn't be able to compete at my best. I spent the rest of my trip in Bend sleeping. I passed out in my hotel bed after my race and slept through the rest of the day, including the elite race unfortunately. I lead an exciting life, I know.
The next day was awesome, you just can't beat 20 hour travel days followed by quick unpacking and repacking of a dorm room to get ready to go home. My roommate and I stayed up late making sure we had everything set and ready to go in the morning. After a smooth load up, we were ready to head up to MI. 3 miles into our journey my car makes a funny noise and then instantly dies. Long story short, I got towed back into town, found out my engine was blown, tried to find another way home, decided to rent a u-haul with a trailer, tried to put the truck on the trailer, my truck was too big and didn't fit, become heartbroken, took a 17 ft u-haul up to MI because it was my only option of a rental truck. My wallet is toast.
Usually I am really excited when I get home and I will unpack everything right away. This time I did not. I fell asleep, it was magical.
Good bye fall semester of 2010
